In small bowl, mix buttermilk, baking soda and egg. Set aside. In large mixing bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Blend shortening into dry mixture. Combine buttermilk mixture and dry mixture. If too dry, add buttermilk or if too moist, add flour. On floured surface, roll dough to 1" thickness. Use a 2" to 3" circular cookie cutter to form scones. Bake at 350° for 18 minutes. Yields 15 to 20 scones.
