The Scrip program at Valley Bible Church is offered to all members to help parents with the cost of trips and activities for children involved in the junior high and high school youth groups. Scrip allows parents to accumulate funds for trips without spending any more money than they usually would. Scrip is not like other fundraising activities that you may need to buy candy bars, magazines, or t-shirts and a percentage of the cost of the item goes to the group raising the funds. Since our activities are very important to the spiritual life of our youth and they can become expensive, we hope the Scrip program will help families with the costs and allow their children to be able to fully participate in our youth ministry. Scrip are gift certificates that you purchase in the church office and are used the same as cash. These certificates are the same certificates that you can purchase in the stores. What makes them different buying them from the church rather than buying them at the store is the way that Valley Bible has purchased them. We purchase the gift certificates from a Scrip center that sells them to us at small discount. For example, $100 in Vons gift certificates cost the church $96 plus shipping. The difference of $4 is our "profit" which we give almost 90% of to the participating family. We deduct a little to cover the shipping charges. This profit is then split between the children of the participating family and accumulates until a parent wants to use the money for a youth activity for the qualifying child in junior high or high school. If you were to buy theses same Vons gift certificates at Vons you would still pay $100 but there would not be small profit to accumulate for your children.
This seems like such a small amount, Why would I want to do this? It would take so long to accumulate enough money to do anything. Let’s make the assumption that a family of four, two adults and two children, spend approximately $100 a week on groceries, that would be $5200 per year. The profit would be $208 of which the family would receive approximately $187 to split between the two children, or about $93 each. If the children were not yet involved in the youth group the money would accumulate until the children were in the youth group. If these same certificates were purchased at the store, you would still spend $5200 but you would have $0 accumulated for your child. You may be saying to yourself, "I don’t have school age children, therefore, this does not apply to me." You can still participate in the program. You have the option of designating your proceeds to a particular family or you may have your funds go into the youth fund for scholarships and other youth needs. Everyone can participate!
Grocery stores are not the only certificates that are available. There are many restaurants, including fast food restaurants, department stores, specialty stores and gas stations. A complete list of participating stores is available in the church office. We do not carry all the stores listed but we are able to special order them for you. Scrip certificates are sold in the church office Monday through Friday and on Sunday morning following each service.
