Buy Truth and Do Not Sell It

This morning at TMS chapel, Bob Provost, President of Slavic Gospel Association in Russia, spoke passionately with conviction about the truth and its effect in the country of Russia, where he serves. The first phrase of Proverbs 23:23 says, "Buy truth, and do not sell it..." Simple to commit to memory yet easy to disobey, this truth drives churches across the world to be and do all that God wants for His people.

Mexicali Mexico

Recent attempts to connect with a church in Mexico have been delayed due to unforeseen events which have arisen. Valley Bible is still hopeful to soon visit a particular church in Mexicali, Mexico. This church is close to the border (accessible), young, needs help, and most importantly has Biblically sound leaders. So just as the dry earth waits for the rain to fall, so Valley Bible waits for the Lord to open the door to Mexico. In His timing there will be a harvest of righteousness sown. Let us all pray in patience.

God's Sovereignty at Play

James MacDonald, pastor of Harvest Bible Chapel in the Chicago area, spoke in chapel at The Master's Seminary this Thursday on Acts 12. He said that it is easy to say that God is in control of all that is going on around us, but it is quite difficult to truly believe that God is sovereign when life gets difficult. There are four truths pulled out of Acts 12 which help us truly believe that God is sovereign.

An Acts 6:4 Ambidextrous Church

Pastor John MacArthur's former personal assistant, Daniel Henderson, preached in chapel on Acts 6:1-7 on his passion to equip pastors in ministry in the arena of prayer. He called it "An Acts 6:4 Renaissance", declaring that revival, reawakening of that which is true, and rebirth are only possible through declaring dependence and prayerfulness to the LORD. He pointed out a few major observations from the text:

1) Natural crisis can lead to supernatural opportunity;
2) Focused leadership leads to supernatural opportunity; and
3) Unleashed saints accomplish supernatural ministry.

Service Needs in Valley

There are some important areas of need in certain ministries at Valley Bible that have come up either as a result of moving to the new building and cutting the third service out, people dropping out for whatever reason, overall short-handedness, or just that our church is growing. The college group is a group of believers that is perfect to pull from and get plugged in to some of these areas of needs. If you feel like you could help one service on Sunday mornings and aren't already busy for that "off service", then please talk with myself (Kyle Jenison), Kim Taylor (children's ministries), Rocky Osborne (AWANA ministry, coffee and donut ministry, and greeting ministry), or David Johnston (youth ministry). There are more areas to serve and leaders who are eager to have another committed soul to help with the work in their particular ministry. More information will be coming about specific service descriptions from the ministry leaders themselves.

The Weighty Glory of God

Pastor Tom Pennington from Countryside Bible Church in Texas, spoke in chapel on Ephesians 1 to show us that God chose us to manifest the glory of his grace. He began with stating that "Man has an insatiable desire to glorify himself". How often can we agree with that? But that is not the Lord's plan. His far more supreme plan is to chose us that He might be made much of, not us. And that is exactly what verses 3-14 are: an outburst (all in one sentence) of praise to God for His plan of redemption.

He went on to handle the text pointing to just the first part of verse 6 which says, "to the praise of his glorious grace".

Tuesday Prayer Meetings

In last week's prayer meeting we looked at Acts 6:1-7 and examined what it took for the church to experience supernatural opportunity. The answer lies in verse 4 and emphasizes a devotion to "prayer and the ministry of the Word".

At Valley Bible we make it our aim to honor the Word, to follow Christ's command, and to subject ourselves to the text of Scripture, but how will this commitment please the Lord if we aren't devoting ourselves just as passionately to entering the presence of the Lord in prayer?

Draw into His presence this week for "He is worthy to be sought."

Found: God's Will

College is that time of life when everything seems to flip upside down. You take college-level courses to line you up for a career and not just an education; you have to find a job or grants and scholarships to be able to make it financially; you are keeping your eyes wide open for the special mate you might marry just around the corner; you may be moving out and having to live on your own means; you will be finding your role more in the body of Christ and in which local church you will serve in; you get the idea...

In our College Sunday school class, Tim Moes will be leading our group through a book discussion on pastor and writer John MacArthur's Found: God's Will. Hopefully this will be a time to learn how to think Biblically about all those hard decisions and what exactly to do for you in life.

A Physician of Souls

Pastor Scott Ardavanis from Placerita Baptist Church in Santa Clarita preached powerfully and passionately from 1 Thessalonians 5:14. "Jesus is a Physician of souls and each person is sick in different ways," says Pastor Scott. This passage is a biblical strategy for dealing with people with varying degrees of sickness. From this verse we see that as "brothers", meaning the whole body of Christ, we must all:
1) Admonish the unruly;
2) Encourage the fainthearted; and
3) Help the weak.

Seeking the approval of man, or God?

Pastor Brad Klausen, Dean of a Preachers Institute called Samara Seminary in Russia, said, "The greatest need in Russia is for expository preaching." He challenged us in chapel to think about reasons why you wouldn't go to into missions work. He asked what our motives in ministering to others are and then laid out 3 realities found in Galatians 1:10 relating to this topic:
1) Ministry is all about a search for approval;
2) The search for approval only finds two sources; and
3) The two sources of approval are mutually exclusive.

An Uncontentious Contender for the Truth

In The Master's Seminary (TMS) chapel on Thursday (10/4), the message was on "How to Contend for the Truth without being Contentious" and the text was 2 Timothy 2:23-26. Paul encouraged Timothy with four right ways to handle when truth is mishandled in the church:
(1) Refuse to discuss silly speculative subjects, v. 23;
(2) Represent the Lord Jesus Christ, v. 24;
(3) Rely on God and His Word, v. 25b; and
(3) Remember the ultimate objective, vv. 25-26.

Missing the Mark

Due to the busyness of my schedule this school year, we will be taking a break from going through the book of Mark. Starting this Friday night, the ROCK group will be studying an overview of the Old Testament as we cover one book a week, or at least try to. The OT in general provides a better background, fuller understanding, and broader base to everything we study in the New Testament.

Sunday School Status

We have had the great opportunity to hear Gerry Andersen teach on World Missions in the adult Sunday School class for the passed three weeks. The first week was the Passion for Missions, and then we looked into Principles of Missions. We learned about the People of Missions las Sunday, and next week will be the Practice of Missions. Please try to make it to this last class during first service in room 104. In two weeks we will be back in the Library with C. J. Mahaney's The Cross-Centered Life.

Open Doors and Hearts for the Gospel

"Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. 3 At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open up to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison--4 that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak."
