CremationCremation has become more and more
popular, for financial reasons if nothing else. Some Christians believe it is
wrong to be cremated. Recently we were asked what we think? Check out our
Ask The Elders page or click here.
What does the Roman Catholic Church think? Canon
1203 of the 1917 Code of Canon Law forbade the practice of cremation. Canon 1176
of the 1983 Code of Canon Law allowed the practice of cremation unless it was
chosen for reasons contrary to Christian teaching (of course, anything chosen
for reasons contrary to Christian teaching is contrary to Christian
teaching).
Just another example of the official Roman Catholic doctrine landing on both sides of a controversial issue. Which is just what you'd expect from any human institution with many centuries under its belt. Posted: Wed - September 6, 2006 at 12:42 PM |
